About This Item

Gloucester, Mackerel Fleet at Dawn
Former Title: Prout's Neck, Mackerel Fleet at Dawn 1884
Winslow Homer, American, 1836–1910
Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
Henry H. and Zoë Oliver Sherman Fund and Mrs. James J. Storrow, Jr., 1985
Accession number: 1985.332

Homer executed this and "Gloucester, Mackeral Fleet at Sunset" (1985.331) on the cabin paneling of his brother Arthur's sailboat. On one panel, Homer showed a fishing fleet leaving Gloucester in the pearly light of dawn, and on the other, he depicted two schooners-one towing a dingy-against a brilliant, sunset sky. Since these paintings were meant to decorate the interior of a boat, Homer showed the sea as benign and calm rather than perilous and stormy, as it was in many of his other paintings.

Matted to a standard 11" x 14" format (image size may vary).
