About This Item

Rocky or hospitable, wild or tamed through human use, the landscapes of New England have long captivated American artists. Painters such as John Frederick Kensett (1816 1872) and George Inness (1825 1894) depicted the region s waterfalls, coastlines, and church spires in the signature tones of the Hudson River School. Others, like Theodore M. Wendel (1859 1932), painted New England mill towns and harbors using the color palette and broken brushstrokes of American impressionism, while Edward Hopper (1882 1967) captured in watercolor realism the soft light cast over Vermont waterways and sturdy Cape Cod houses.

The artists represented here had strong ties to the New England states, most having been born in the Northeast. These twelve works span nearly a century of American landscape painting. All are in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
