About This Item

Emily Banis Stoehrer

This publication explores the life and career of the French couturier Lucien Lelong. Best remembered for his leadership during the occupation, Lelong's talents and contributions to the fashion industry are far more extensive. During the first half of the twentieth-century Lelong acted as an astute arbiter of fashionable tastes, an outspoken advocate of modernity, and a businessman with great foresight. Working to modernize the French fashion industry Lelong juxtaposed art and commerce and succeeded in building a world-renowned fashion business. The careful construction of his brand led Lelong to become one of the most famous and respected couturiers of his day.

The content of this publication is based largely on the Lucien Lelong Archive of more than 500 original design drawings that was recently donated to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston by Jean S. and Frederic A. Sharf.

Emily Banis Stoehreris is program director and Assistant Professor of Fashion at Boston's Fisher College. Previously she worked as Curatorial Research Associate in the department of Textiles and Fashion Arts at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
