Jackson Pollock (American, 1912-1956) studied art in New York City. While he was largely influenced by his mentor, Thomas Hart Benton, and later, Mexican muralists, he was ultimately interested in surrealism and the work of Picasso. In 1947, after years of painting, Jackson Pollock's work dramatically changed. He began painting large canvases on the floor using his "drip" method in which a brush never touched the canvas, but instead the paint dripped from his brushes to create his signature stylized paintings. He began using his entire body to create his large scale canvases with this method, thought to be one of the origins of the term "Action Painting" in which the physical act of painting itself is heavily emphasized.
