Vaillancourt Folk Art is one of America’s last remaining Christmas collectible makers. These chalkware figures are made by hand in Massachusetts. Each one is created by taking a vintage chocolate mold, filling it with a plaster-like substance, and hand painting the resulting “chalkware”. While the mold-maker’s palette has been limited to chocolate brown, Judi Vaillancourt’s colors bring each figure to life.
Vaillancourt has traveled to Poland to have glass ornaments made as companion pieces to their chalkware designs. Using traditional techniques dating back 450 years in Eastern Europe, these hand-blown ornaments differ from the rest because they are painted with a matte finish, which allows the subtly and richness of the hand-painted details to stand out.
